{"id":16479,"date":"2024-05-18T07:40:09","date_gmt":"2024-05-18T11:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=16479"},"modified":"2024-05-18T07:40:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-18T11:40:10","slug":"mural-makeover-effort-set-to-begin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/18\/mural-makeover-effort-set-to-begin\/","title":{"rendered":"Mural makeover effort set to begin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rick Sovine, owner of the Next Page Bookstore &amp; More in downtown Decatur, spent his Friday doing some tuck-pointing of the building&#8217;s brick (see photo) in preparation for the makeover of the mural on the west side of the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weather permitting, Samantha Hindenlang will begin work on the mural on Monday. The effort is likely to take a couple of works, or more, depending on the weather, Sovine estimated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"589\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/9EA17264FD84475CBAF465F05A42BF9E.jpg?resize=589%2C384&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/9EA17264FD84475CBAF465F05A42BF9E.jpg?w=589&amp;ssl=1 589w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/9EA17264FD84475CBAF465F05A42BF9E.jpg?resize=300%2C196&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Sovine doing some tuck-pointing work<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The mural was painted on the west wall of the building to mark Decatur&#8217;s sesquicentennial (150 years) in 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been showing deterioration over the last few years of the 38-year stretch, so Rick and his wife, Emily, decided to not only refresh the mural but refresh the message as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the work is completed, the updated mural will say: \u201cWelcome to Decatur established 1836.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sovines were recently chosen for a grant from the City of Decatur&#8217;s facade program to help pay for the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/6E20DC9B9B504B9FB33D7F3DD736E67A.jpg?resize=384%2C288&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/6E20DC9B9B504B9FB33D7F3DD736E67A.jpg?w=384&amp;ssl=1 384w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/6E20DC9B9B504B9FB33D7F3DD736E67A.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>This will be the mural\u2019s new message<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it&#8217;s very important to the city.
