We want all Adams County Citizens and those visiting our community to enjoy viewing the solar eclipse and to do so safely. To ensure the safety of the community, Sheriff Mawhorr has increased deputies on the roadways, added additional 911 dispatchers in our Communication Center, and is working with the other emergency services agencies in Adams County.
We do want to remind the public to PLAN AHEAD for this event by having plenty of GAS and fully stocked emergency preparations in your vehicle for delays caused by congested roadways due to the increase in vehicular traffic. We ask that everyone find somewhere safe to view the event and not stop on the roadways. Please remember to be RESPECTFUL of other people’s PROPERTY, and we hope this will be a memorable time for all of us.
We have had heavy rainfall in the past couple of days and the Sheriff’s office wants to remind everyone NOT to drive through HIGH water. We have had at least 4 water rescues in the past 2 days. High water can be very dangerous and should never be crossed. Please be patient over this TSE event.

Here are some tips from the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indiana State Police…

Eye Safety – Looking directly at a Solar Eclipse can cause serious long-term eye damage potentially resulting in blindness. Special glasses can be worn to view the event, while still protecting your eyes. These must be labeled ISO 12312-2 (some add :2015) and should not be scratched, torn, or punctured. Do not use protective glasses with any known magnifier, such as binoculars or camera lenses. These require a specific solar filter to use. Some vendors may sell knock-off glasses, so ensure that you are purchasing from a source approved by the American Astronomical Society. A list of approved vendors is available on the North Adams Website. All students in Adams County, both public and private, will be receiving a free pair of glasses for the event. Homeschooling families can contact the Adams County Emergency Management Agency to receive their pair.

Secure Animals – Animals have been shown to have anxious, confused, and agitated reactions during
eclipses. They often abruptly begin nightly routines and are thrown off when the sun returns. Ensure all
animals, including working and non-working, are in a secure location. It is strongly recommended by the
Indiana State Board of Animal Health to avoid any horse-related transportation during the eclipse. The
eclipse and effects of it can make them unpredictable.

This is truly a once in a lifetime event. We want to thank the Adams County Emergency Management Agency, Barb Lehrman, and Magen Wilson for all the help and information they and all their committees have put together to help enjoy this experience.
