They made nine of 20 three-point attempts in the first half, including three each from sharpshooter Nolan Swan (Tipton\u2019s leading scorer at 20.8 ppg) and Sam Quigley. Junior phenom Grady Carpenter\u2014who is listed as a 6-6 guard but plays everywhere, including inside defensively\u2014drained a pair of long-range shots. A resilient Jet team turned the tables on the Blue Devils in the third quarter, hitting nine of 13 two-point attempts to earn an 18-11 advantage and trim the lead to eight at 44-36.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/New-Recording-6.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>WZBD&#8217;s Randy Hisner spoke with head coach Aaron McClure after the ballgame, where the Jets put in a heck of a performance against the top-rated Blue Devils. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>McClure didn\u2019t claim any halftime coaching magic. \u201cI thought we did a good job of just kind of maintaining what we were trying to do,\u201d he said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t really make many adjustments. (Photo by Randy Hisner)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The quarter started with the Jets\u2019 Micah McClure hitting a drive on the right side and Tipton\u2019s Jackson Money countering with a three from the top of the key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came a 10-2 Adams Central run. Ryan Tester started it with a layup at the 6:55 mark, and then Isaac Schultz, who scored a game-high 27 points, hit a fast break layup, thanks to a steal and assist from McClure. Swan hit a mid-range jumper for the Blue Devils, but Schultz hit a put back off Tester\u2019s missed three. Tester stole the ball on Tipton\u2019s next possession and hit McClure with a perfect pass for a layup. After Swan hit a floater for Tipton, Maller responded with a stop-and-pop three on a fast break and then a put back on McClure\u2019s errant three-point attempt. Schultz continued the rally with three baskets in less than a minute\u2014two put backs and a post-up move after a nice entry pass from McClure with 1:21 to go.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it was 54-50. Suddenly, the #1 2A team in the state looked vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Blue Devils, however, regained their composure and got the ball to Quigley wide open underneath for an easy layup with 44 seconds left. After a defensive stop, Swan made two free throws with 20.9 to go, stretching the lead to eight at 58-50. The Jets connected on only one of 11 for a wretched 9%. They were better on twos (20-of-41 for 49%). Tipton hit 9-of-20 two-pointers (45%). I didn\u2019t think there was any quit in our guys. I liked how we fought right to the end. We gave ourselves a chance. They\u2019re good, they\u2019re really good. I think we\u2019re good too. Tonight, one good team beat another good team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tipton\u2019s only loss was to Kokomo, the #9 team in 4A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an eye toward a tough tournament road\u2014the Jets\u2019 sectional at Bluffton features four of the top 11 teams in 2A\u2014McClure felt his squad, ranked ninth in the latest poll, needed to beef up its schedule.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a couple openings on our schedule this year,\u201d he said, \u201cand there were probably some games we could have picked up that would have resulted in two pretty easy wins, but we added Tipton and Fort Wayne North Side. Maller scored nine, while Reber had five points and five boards. McClure scored four points and grabbed five rebounds.
