As a longtime City of Decatur employee – assistant operations manager since 2017 – Matt Schultz has seen his share of late nights/early mornings moving snow from city streets.
This time, though, was different: he was in charge of the cleanup effort as Decatur’s new operations manager.
And last weekend’s effort passed with flying colors, as far as Mayor Dan Rickord is concerned.

“I want to give a special thank-you to our city employees,” the mayor said in winding up Tuesday night’s brief city council meeting. “The streets were pretty clear out there (in a short time), so thanks to our workers.”
Rickord added that the snow-removal crews don’t necessarily get started as the first flakes begin coming down. “They wait until there is some accumulation so they’re not going out three or four times,” he explained.
Schultz said snow-removal operations began around 3 a.m. Sunday, with eight trucks involved in the effort which continued until around noon.
“It went pretty well – we had only one blown tire,” Schultz said.
