An early-morning collision in Wells County was fatal, killing the driver of one vehicle involved, and the other driver was still at-large hours after the incident, according to local police.
The Wells County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement a few hours after the incident:
A two-vehicle head-on collision occurred in Wells County involving a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country and a 2013 GMC Terrain. Emergency responders were dispatched to the area of SR 218 and CR 700 E for a reported head-on collision. Upon the arrival of first responders, the driver of the Town and Country was pinned inside the vehicle. First responders performed life-saving measures, but the driver ultimately succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Four other passengers in the vehicle were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The driver of the GMC Terrain fled the scene, according to witnesses. A large-scale search was conducted by multiple agencies in an attempt to locate the driver. At the time of the release, the driver is still at large.
An autopsy is pending at the Northeast Forensic Center in Fort Wayne.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Bluffton Fire Department, Ossian Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Berne Police Department, Wells County EMS, Wells County Coroner’s Office, Wells County EMA, and Bluffton Dispatch Center.
Anyone with any information about the driver who fled is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office.
The driver who died on the scene was identified by Detective Greer as 76-year-old Neil Scott of Decatur, Indiana. The time of the incident was noted as 5:53 a.m.
