Werling Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Center will feature some of its animals to support a fundraiser it will hold this Saturday to assist a local group of volunteers who help feed Decatur-area youngsters and their families.
The fundraiser is planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Center in Decatur to assist the Hero Meals organization.
“Come and see some cool animals and bring your donations of boxes of cereal, canned soup, and canned veggies (nothing expired, and think kid-friendly),” Werling said in making the announcement.

Cash donations also will be accepted.
Hero Meals is a community-based organization that provides free and nutritious meals to North Adams Schools students and their families.
Meals include primarily non-perishable food items which can easily be prepared to meet a family’s needs through weekends and holidays. Any student who is eligible for the Free & Reduced Meals program at North Adams qualifies to participate in Hero Meals.
Hero Meals volunteers gather each week to fill bags with the food items which are then taken to the school.
Werling Wildlife Rehabilitation, situated on Winchester Road, takes in injured and orphaned opossums, rabbits, skunks, turtles, muskrats, groundhogs, squirrels, foxes, otters, beavers, and raptors – birds of prey such as hawks, owls, vultures. (They do not take in or advise on other birds.)
Founded over a decade ago, Werling Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center began as a small volunteer initiative and has grown into a vital hub for wildlife rescue and environmental education.
The organization says its history is “rooted in compassion and scientific knowledge, guiding our ongoing mission to protect vulnerable species and promote sustainable stewardship of natural habitats throughout the region.”
