North Adams Schools Resource Officer Andrew Elwell came in for some praise at a recent meeting of Decatur City Council.
Barb Engle talked briefly about a recent donation the Adams County Retired Teachers Assocation, of which she is a member, made to a fund to support the Decatur Police Department’s K-9, Koda.
Koda works with Elwell in the schools.
Engle, a former member of city council and the Indiana Legislature, told council that Elwell was someone the department and community can be “very, very proud of.”
“He is such a fine gentleman.”
“He is doing a wonderful job out there (North Adams),” Mayor Dan Rickord added.
In May of 2024, Elwell was named to the post, working at Bellmont high and middle schools, and began the duties at the beginning of the current school year.
Now in his sixth year with the department, Elwell replaced Trent Busse in the post at the school.
PAPERWORK: Prior to the council meeting, the board of works and safety approved a certificate of appointment for Conrad Dyer, the city’s latest addition to the police department.
Dyer, 22, had been a confinement officer at the Adams County Jail for four years.
“We’re excited to have him,” the mayor said.
Since he held that position, the 2021 graduate of Bellmont High School had passed all required tests, including PERF, so he could join the department immediately.
He will, however, have to attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at Plainfield.
The addition of Dyer keeps the Decatur PD at full force: 20 officers, including Gerber and Deputy Chief Chris Brite.
Eric Mitchel left the department in September to join the Indiana State Police.
