Once again, the Decatur Police Department is shorthanded!
Police Chief Kevin Gerber told the city’s board of works and safety Tuesday night that officer Luke Rumschlag had resigned, effective Sept. 8.

No mention was made of what Rumschlag’s plans may be. He had been with the department since March of 2018.
The board gave Gerber approval to begin the application process to find a new officer.

At the board’s previous meeting two weeks earlier, it was announced that Eric Mitchel was leaving the department. But Gerber said he already had added a replacement, Conrad Dyer, 22.
Dyer had been a confinement officer at the Adams County Jail for four years, so he had passed all required tests, including PERF, and could join the department immediately upon his hiring.
He will, however, have to attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at Plainfield in the near future.
When at full strength, the department has 20 officers, including Gerber and Deputy Chief Chris Brite.
HIRING: Pre-applications for the post of patrolman may be obtained at the police department on Seventh St. or downloaded from the department’s official website.
Completed pre-applications must be submitted to City Hall. Further instructions and requirements are provided on the pre-application form.
Pre-applications will be accepted until Friday, October 17, 2025 by 4 p.m.
The starting salary is $60,770, with vacation and officer wellness packages, an annual clothing allowance and a take-home vehicle provided.
For more information, those interested may call the PD, (260) 724-8646.
