The Decatur Police Department has lost an officer but remains at full strength due to a new hire.
Conrad Dyer has joined the department and is already on duty.
Eric Mitchel is leaving the local PD to join the Indiana State Police.
“He’s been with us just over six years and he’s been a great officer for us,” Chief Kevin Gerber said of Mitchel as he brought the resignation to the city’s board of works and safety. “He’s going to a better offer than we can provide.”
Sept. 12 is Mitchel’s resignation date.

Dyer, 22, has been a confinement officer at the Adams County Jail for four years.
Since he has been a jail employee, the 2021 graduate of Bellmont High School has passed all required tests, including PERF, so he could join the department immediately upon his hiring.
He will, however, have to attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at Plainfield in the near future.
The addition of Dyer keeps the Decatur PD at full force: 20 officers, including Gerber and Deputy Chief Chris Brite.
