The design for the City of Decatur’s new flag has been selected and will be unveiled at Downtown Decatur Day on Saturday.
Jenny Bowers-Shultz told city council at its meeting Tuesday night that the chosen design will be announced at 1 p.m. during the numerous activities going on at the annual event.

Bowers-Shultz, a member of council, originated the idea of having a city flag and organized the contest to determine a design. In announcing the idea last fall, she said she hoped flag would “foster civic pride, uniting the community around an official symbol representative of the history and promising future of the City of Decatur.”
People submitted their designs, with a total of 52 received.
The person who submitted the winning design will receive a $1,000 prize. The winner, however, will not be able to be on hand Saturday, Bowers-Shultz said.
A committee whittled the entries to three. The committee agreed with the public vote on the winning design, Bowers-Shultz said.
City council must give final approval and is expected to due so at its next meeting, July 1.
