The Festival de Hispanos, which proved to be hugely popular when held for the first time last year, will be returning to the Madison St. Plaza in Decatur this year.
Two of the organizers, Carson Canales and his mother, Stephanie, told city council at a recent meeting that this year’s festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20.
They were on hand to ask permission to use the plaza on that date; it was readily granted.

With many details yet to be put together, Carson Canales said more vendors and food trucks are expected this year. And, of course, there were be lots of music.
Asked by Mayor Dan Rickord if the “low riders” would be back, Carson replied that the organization that provided them last year was booked for Sept. 20, but is working with the Canales family to find some others.
A lowrider, Wikipedia says, “is a customized car with a lowered body that emerged among Mexican-American youth in the 1940s. Lowrider also refers to the driver of the car and their participation in lowrider car clubs, which remain a part of Chicano culture…”
Last year’s first-time festival drew an estimated 1,500 people on a hot September day.
Carson, brother Drexel, and Stephanie organized last year’s event.
