Adams Central Community Schools superintendent Joel Mahaffey’s resignation and a separation agreement with the district were accepted at a school board meeting Friday morning.
The board voted 5-2 to accept both the resignation and the separation agreement, with members Ben Liechty and Mike Brown voting “nay”.
Arrested on misdemeanor OWI charges earlier in the year, Mahaffey had been given a vote of confidence by the school board in meeting in March – with the board voting to keep Mahaffey, citing his strong record with the district, in a 5-2 vote. Mahaffey’s resignation was submitted on April 14th.

Mahaffey will remain employed at the district through the end of the school year in a more distant role.
The negotiated separation agreement is confidential.
During Friday’s early-morning meeting, High School/Middle School Principal Katie Isch was chosen to take care of the responsibilities of the superintendent’s position until a replacement is hired.
The board president, Heather Frank, noted that the board met Friday morning – which was as soon as possible once Mahaffey’s resignation was submitted earlier in the week – so that the search could commence immediately for Mahaffey’s replacement.
Public comment was held prior to accepting the resignation of Mahaffey. Employees of the district spoke in support of the superintendent and thanked him for his time at Adams Central.
One Adams Central employee spoke to the board, chastising them for a perceived poor level of communication. The speaker told the board that some Adams Central employees feel that certified staff often find out news about the district on Facebook before official communication from the district.
The 7 a.m. meeting lasted just 15 minutes.
