It won’t happen in the near future, but the awarding of a major grant has the Rickord Administration and Decatur City Council looking to make major safety improvements to a couple of pedestrian crossings leading to and from North Adams Schools.
The crossings are on E. Monroe St., connecting Stratton Addition and Ogg St., and on Piqua Rd, connecting a housing addition and other homes to Bellmont Middle School.

Both crossings have already seen safety improvements, but much greater upgrades are likely forthcoming, thanks to a grant of $460,000 the city has recently received from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The city will add a 10% match.
The only downside is that the changes aren’t going to be made in the near future.
Operations Manger Jeremy Gilbert explained to city council at a recent meeting of the many humps that need to be cleared, starting with the selection of an engineer. Then will come designs, specifications and more, leading up to the letting of bids.
So construction may not begin before 2027, he said.
“We will do everything we can get it done as soon as possible,” Mayor Dan Rickord vowed.
“This is a very worthwhile project,” Gilbert added.
