
Albert F. “Al” Gillig, 97, of Decatur, IN, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Adams Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 19, 1927, in Decatur, IN, the son of the late Leo T. and Florence L. (Kohne) Gillig. He was the oldest of eight children.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Gillig and a sister, Rosemary Sheley. Al is survived by brothers, David, Donald, Anthony, and Gerald Gillig and sister, Marcella Smith.
Al was drafted into the service of the United States Army Air Force and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He had worked with his father at Decatur Dry Cleaners for many years and then was the Supervisor of Laundry & Housekeeping at Adams County Memorial Hospital.
He was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was a 1945 graduate of Decatur Catholic High School. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 864 and the V.F.W. Post 6236.
Al enjoyed raising many kinds of beautiful flowers, plants, and gardening. Also cooking his famous turkey and dressing during the holidays.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 4, 2024, in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Fr. David Ruppert, Fr. Stephen Colchin, and Fr. David Violi will be concelebrating.
A reciting of the Holy Rosary will be held prior to Mass at 9:00 a.m. and visitation to follow from 9:20 – 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
Burial will immediately follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Adams Post 43 Color Guard.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
