PRESS RELEASE
Change is in the air!
If you’ve been to downtown Decatur recently, you may have seen members of the Decatur Sculpture Tour hard at work as they prepare for the 2024 Decatur Sculpture Tour.
DST artists Greg Mendez and Alex Mendez have been removing the 2023 exhibits in preparation for the new arrivals for the Saturday, June 8, 8:00 a.m. installations.
The Decatur Sculpture Tour Committee is announcing our 13th Anniversary of new, original outdoor sculptures to the city in the Second Street Gallery. This year, the DST announces a couple of impressive partners: Hoosier Pattern Iron Pour and Wildflowers Concert.
On Friday, June 7th, the Hoosier Pattern Second Annual Iron Pour begins at 7:00 p.m. at Hoosier Pattern (906 N. 10th Street, Decatur). This amazingly impressive display of molten metal transforms the 300 individually created sand molds into heavy-weight artistic creations. These iron-work artists from Wisconsin are in Decatur for this very special event.
On Saturday, June 8th, the Wildflowers Concert, in memory of Connor Brite, begins at 5:00 p.m. with a variety of bands, food, and drink options on the Madison Street Plaza.
In the coming weeks you will see the 2023 sculptures that have been on display for 10 months come down and be replaced with the 28 new 2024 works. The locations of the sculptures will be mainly on the 2nd Street Gallery, but you will find more on Madison Plaza, 1st Street, 3rd Street, Monroe Street, and Riverside Park.
This year’s tour begins Saturday, June 8 with installation at 8:00 a.m. The unveiling festival will have the featured exhibit that begins the tour on the courthouse square unveiled at 3:00 p.m. While all other exhibits will remain uncovered, the Mayor Dan Rickord’s welcome and unveiling at 3:00 pm is the kick-off for the first organized DST Artists tour for the season. The attending artists will be at their exhibit to explain the inspiration for their creation.
Susan Roe, North Adams Arts Council (NAAC) president and DST Committee member, reminds the community that each exhibit has an element of education and certainly family-friendly entertainment. For docent-led tours, please contact the DST at: www.decatursculpturetour.com, or Kelly Ehinger at the APLS, Decatur Branch or call 724-2605.
