A new U8 soccer program being offered by Muddy River FC this spring will focus on correct skill and technique for beginner boys and girls in Adams County. The program is for local youth who were born in 2016 and 2017. There will be a structured one-hour practice on Monday evenings and one-hour games on Wednesday evenings in Decatur. The Development League will run from April 8th through May 15th. Practices will focus on technical skills such dribbling, passing, shooting, and trapping the ball. Each week there will be a different skill focus. The games held on Wednesdays will be small sided (4v4) on a small field. This will give players plenty of touches to try the newly learned skills. There will be additional opportunity to play weekend games vs other area U8 programs.
The U8 Development Program is being headed up by former Purdue soccer player, Shayna Coy. Coy is a Fort Wayne native and grew up playing club soccer. She went on to help lead Bishop Luers to three consecutive semi-state births. Joining Coy will be Jake Briede and Carly Gilbert.
Briede is a former Bellmont player and coach where he coached the Braves to three sectional titles. He played collegiate soccer at the University of Saint Francis and is currently the Director of Coaching for MRFC.
Gilbert, a current Morehead State soccer commit, led the NE8 conference in scoring the last four years. She began playing soccer in Decatur when she was 5 years old and has played club soccer in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. Â
A statement released by a MRFC official stated, “We are excited to start this new program which will be offered both in the spring and the fall. Teaching kids correct technique and skills from the moment they begin playing soccer will make a big impact on the future of the sport in the community.”
The cost to register for the U8 program is $75 and includes a shirt and soccer socks. MRFC is also currently registering for their U10, U12, and U19 travel teams. For more information and to register, go to www.muddyriverfc.com. The deadline to register for the spring season is March 22nd.
