A condemned home on Schirmeyer St. will be demolished to make way for a new structure.
Building/Zoning Superintendent Curt Witte told Decatur’s board of works and safety at its recent meeting that the condemned building has been purchased by Mark Mendez.
Witte said Mendez wants to have the city demolish it for him and he will cover the cost of the work.

Jeremy Gilbert, the city’s operations manager, said city employees can handle the razing, so the board gave its approval.
Witte said that getting an “outside contractor” to do the work would likely cost four or five times more than what the city can do it for. That savings, he added, will just mean more money going back into the local economy.
It was noted after the meeting that local builder Jerry Geimer will be constructing two duplexes in the area.
