Although it has just begun the second half of 2023, Decatur City Council is already beginning to look ahead to 2024.
And no surprise as it’s time to begin preparing a budget for 2024.

Clerk-Treasurer Phyllis Whitright (photo) passed out an initial budget proposal at council’s August 1 meeting; council members and Mayor Dan Rickord are now reviewing the figures.
Then, at the August 15 meeting, council and the mayor will begin the lengthy process of going over the budget numbers line by line.
A final budget approval will gain council approval in early October, then be sent to Adams County Council for its okay (always automatic) and then to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.

The DLGF can make some cuts in the proposal or allow it stand as is.
The current budget stands at $11.8 million and the 2022 budget was just under $11 million.
The 2024 budget will be the last prepared by Whitright, who is retiring after 26 years in the clerk-treasurer’s office.
