The Adams County Clerk has requested a half million dollars to digitize and archive the county’s thousands of paper documents that date back nearly 200 years.
Adams County Clerk Shelly Brite asked the County Commissioners during their meeting Tuesday for $500,000 in federal COVID relief money to properly archive the documents, which include everything from birth and death records, to land purchases and trial transcripts. Those documents are currently on paper and stored in boxes, but could be easily damaged or destroyed.
WZBD’s Ed Thurman spoke with Brite about her request…
As part of the federal COVID recovery act, the federal government authorized millions of dollars to local units of government for a variety of uses, including the proper recording of aging county records.

The Commissioners tabled the request so that Brite can meet with county attorney Mark Burry to discuss the needs in more detail before making a decision.
That money must be earmarked for some specific purpose by the end of this year, and must be spent by 2025.
