Kekionga Pond, alongside Decatur’s new Paws & Play Dog Park, has a whole bunch of new fish swimming around in it.
But if you catch one (or four or five or even 20) you are asked to toss it back so it can grow!
The pond, a popular fishing place, is likely to become even more popular now that the city has stocked it with 100 bass, 500 blue gill, and 500 crappies.
And the pond is said to still have a substantial quantity of catfish.

The new ones are the ones to toss back.
“We’re asking everyone to do catch and release,” Mayor Dan Rickord said at the latest city council meeting. “They’re mid-sized and they need time to grow. So we’re asking for catch and release through 2024.”
The stocking of the pond is part of the three-pronged Kekionga Project for which the city qualified for a $50,000 state Patronicity grant by raising $50,000 through donations.
