Derek Loshe is Decatur’s new deputy police chief, replacing veteran officer Chris Brite.
The announcement was made at Tuesday night’s meeting of the city’s board of works and safety.
Loshe joined the Decatur department in October of 2012.
Brite has moved up the city PD’s ranks through a standout career of 32 years – or, 32 years, 2 months and 13 days, he wrote in a resignation letter to the city.
Brite, Police Chief Kevin Gerber said, “is one of the most loyal, dedicated men I know. This community will never know the sacrifices he’s made to keep this community safe.”
A resolution extolling Brite’s virtues as an officer and as a community leader was read at the city council meeting which followed the board’s meeting.

Brite was at the meeting and as he rose, he received a standing ovation from a packed City Hall chambers.
In his resignation letter, Brite said: “Serving as a police officer and protecting the citizens of Decatur, Indiana has been a privilege. I am grateful for the unwavering support I have received from my fellow officers, department leadership and the community throughout my career.”
“The camaraderie, shared hardships and triumphs I have experienced with this department are memories I will carry with me forever.”
The veteran officer added: “Thank you for your leadership, guidance and the opportunity to serve alongside such a dedicated group of professionals. I wish the Decatur Police Department and all the members continued safety, success and prosperity in the future.”
His final day with the department was the next day.
