Officials from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement Wednesday about a tragic fatal accident in the county:
On Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at approximately 6:41 a.m., Adams County Sheriff’s Deputies, Adams County EMS, and the Monroe Fire Department were dispatched to the area of County Roads 100 E and 200 N in rural Adams County in response to a report of a personal injury crash.
Upon arrival, first responders located a Dodge Ram pickup occupied by James Genth, Decatur, who was found deceased inside the vehicle.Preliminary investigation indicates that Genth was traveling southbound on County Road 100 E while a Honda CRV, driven by May Schwartz, rural Monroe, was traveling northbound. As the two vehicles approached one another, a deer entered the roadway. Schwartz was unable to avoid the animal and struck it with the front of her vehicle. The impact caused the deer to become airborne and travel into the path of Genth’s vehicle.
The deer then penetrated the windshield of Genth’s pickup, striking him with fatal force. No other injuries were reported at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
