A touch of sadness hung over Tuesday night’s City Hall meeting of Decatur City Council, which was held just a few hours after the funeral of former mayor John Schultz.
Mayor Dan Rickord announced toward the end of the meeting that John would be honored at the next meeting, Nov. 18.
“Today just wasn’t the time to do it,” he explained.
Earlier in the meeting, council had made a matter of record of the appointment of Matt Schultz to the position of operations manager, replacing Jeremy Gilbert, who resigned.

Schultz has been assistant operations manager since 2017. Following the mayor’s announcement, Matt, a nephew of John, thanked the police and fire departments for the funeral procession which traveled the city, including the new roundabout of which John played a key role in getting the project off the ground.
Matt also noted that “city council has been very gracious. The family is very proud of everything done.”
“It’s been a long three days.”
Mayor Rickord, who spoke at Tuesday’s funeral service, offered praise for the fire and police departments: “It was a great procession.”
John Schultz recently passed away at the age of 76. He served four terms on city council and two terms as mayor, 2008-2015.
