The Golden Meadows Retirement Home in Adams County is no more.
Adams County’s longtime retirement home watched the last resident move out of the facility on Monday, ending more than 100 years of housing residents. Citing low numbers of residents and increasing costs, the Adams County Commissioners made the decision last year to close Golden Meadows once new homes were found for each resident. The person tasked with finding new homes for the residents was Shannon Greene, the Adams County Human Resource Coordinator.
Greene spoke with WZBD’s Ed Thurman about the process and how touching it was to see the residents go their seperate ways…
The County Commissioners are now investigating what to do with the remaining property and building at Golden Meadows. At one time, nearly all 92 Indiana counties operated retirement homes. With the closing of Golden Meadows, it’s believed there are less than 6 Indiana county retirement homes still in use today.
Meanwhile, the current extreme heat has brought about an emergency for Adams County…not for its employees, but for its high tech equipment.
A major air conditioning unit located in the computer center at the county’s Government Service Complex failed over the weekend, leading county officials to seek immediate repairs and relief to save its entire IT network.
To alleviate the problem, the County Commissioners approved switching out air conditioning units from the Courthouse and the Government Service Center, and then the purchase of two new units to go in at the Service Center to improve the systems in both buildings. The new units could cost up to $20,000, but funds are available to cover the new equipment. Plans for new equipment that was planned for the Courthouse have been put on hold to allow for the emergency purchase of the equipment that is needed to keep the county’s computer systems from overheating.
