As farmers across Z-Land attempt to set out their planting schedule for soybeans and corn, Friday’s rain put a hold on the action.
The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana reported .23 inches in Berne, but Decatur recorded slightly higher totals as the ground received a good soaking with .35 inches of rainfall late in the evening as a line of storms slowly rolled through from the south.
The rain should prove to only be a slight reprieve from activity in the fields with only a slight chance of rain in the forecast over the next five days and temperatures forecast in the 70s.
According to USDA reports, just under 40% of the soybeans in Indiana are in the ground. That is much higher than last year, when poor weather had Indiana behind schedule at just 15%.
For corn, Indiana farmers are also ahead of schedule, with 40% of the crop planted in the Hoosier State. That’s just ahead of the five-year average in Indiana of 34%.
