The Madison St. Plaza in Decatur has proven to be hugely popular since its debut in 2018, what with concerts, weddings, receptions, reunions and more – even wrestling matches, high school and professional!
And although it’s a long way from becoming a reality, the plaza could be gaining a new enhancement in the future: a permanent “canopy” which would cover approximately 30% of the plaza (see photo).
Chamber of Commerce Director Craig Coshow pitched the idea of the covering at the tail-end of city council’s April 2 meeting.
Coshow, also a member of council, has looked into the possibility of purchasing such a structure and said he was asking council’s input. “I wanted to get your permission before I go forward,” he said.
Coshow has talked to a company which could erect an engineered structure for approximately $243,000. It would cover 50 feet of the plaza, which is 175 feet long, from First St. to Second St.
It would cover the area in which most concert-goers sit, in front of the stage, and be above the permanent lights.
Currently, a large tent is usually erected for wedding receptions, class reunions, etc.
Coshow said he would be talking to the Adams County Community Foundation board on May 4 to determine if any financial help might be available there.
“I think it would be a great addition to our community,” Coshow told council.
Council give him the go-ahead.
